Shandonagh club notes

Results

The intermediate team were out in Cusack Park on Saturday last playing Milltown in the last game of the IFC Group 1. Hard work in all the previous games in this group ensured the result of this battle would not affect Shandonaghs position at the top of the table. However a determined Milltown pushed this Shandonagh selection to the limit and came out with a win. Final score Milltown 1:15, Shandonagh 1:12.

Shandonagh now finish top of group 1 in the intermediate football champion which earns them a semi-final spot on the weekend of Saturday 7th October

Our U12 girls overcame Delvin in the semi final on Thursday 13th September last. These girls were very impressive with their style of play displaying skills ahead of their age. Their hard work has now earned them a place in the county final against Garrycastle later in the month.

The team and management would like to extend a big thanks to Buckleys SuperValu Mullingar for the sponsorship of their new set of jerseys. (picture attached)

Shandonagh 50th Anniversary Weekend Report

A great weekend just gone by is proof that Shandonagh Club is laying the right foundations for a successful future.

On Friday night we had a great nights entertainment with our annual table quiz. Huge attendance reflected the continued support from all age groups of both players, parents and supporters. Thanks to all the sponsors for the fantastic range of prizes, the Mullingar Park Hotel for a great venue, our quiz master and all the people both in attendance and absent who supported and helped out with this event.

Shandonagh welcomed U16 Squads from around the County to contest the Padraig Lynn Memorial Cup at Shandonagh on Saturday 15th Sept. Some of the brightest talent in underage GAA in Westmeath presented a festival of football over almost 6 hours that thrilled those lucky enough to be in attendance. The Shandonagh boys met with the significant opposition that was St Lomans before emerging as 4 point winners in their 1st group game. The Downs match followed immediately with a similarly impressive display from the local boys seeing off their esteemed neighbours. These results saw Shandonagh progress to the Cup Semi Final where a stellar Lilliput Gaels outfit provided stern opposition before ultimately falling short in low digit scores. Shandonagh were in the Final. An extremely talented Moate Squad who had defeated Mullingar Shamrocks and Lilliput Gaels earlier in the day awaited us in the final push for the Trophy. The Cup Final was a pulsating affair from start to finish. As legs tired from the frantic pace of almost 4 hours of football, the Shandonagh boys had established a 5 point lead with minutes remaining before a late Moate goal ensured a nerve wrecking last minute. The local boys with a stronger interchange bench found  the legs to withstand the final onslaught and to the delight of local support held on to claim the Cup. Padraig Lynn, in whose memory this Cup is named would have been immensely proud of his young clubmen. The Shield was claimed by Millmore Gaels who reversed a group stage result by defeating Mullingar Shamrocks in the Final. Many Thanks to the players and coaches who helped make this competition a great tribute to a man who was loved and admired across Club rivalries in Westmeath and for continuing to promote the most positive aspects of our great games

Sunday 16th saw a thoroughly enjoyable family fun day and underage football showcase at the club grounds.

Starting at 12pm the U6 players competed against Killucan in a very enjoyable spectacle with great encouragement from both sets of supporters. At the same time the Shandonagh U8 girls took on Multyfarnham and the U10 girls played Milltown both of which drew the biggest crowds of the day.

At 1pm the U8 boys took to the field playing two games against Mullingar Shamrocks. Their will be epic battles ahead with these two teams as Shamrocks edged ahead on the scoreboard but Shandonagh refused to give up until the final whistle.

At 2pm the U10 boys played two games against St Lomans. It's easy to forget what age group you could be watching sometimes as these two teams displayed ball skills, blocking, kicking, and much more beyond their years.

The weather shone, the food was great, the football was better, the people smiled, the fun was had and the atmosphere was brilliant. Thanks to all for making this a very enjoyable day and to all participating clubs in the underage showcase without whose participation the day would not have been as successful.

Special mention to Frank Kiernan the MC for the day and Alyson Byrne for her huge effort and drive in organising the fun day.
