Jack Cooney says he's delighted to get the chance to manage Westmeath.

The Coralstown/Kinnegad clubman becomes the Lake County's first home grown manager in 26 years after being ratified at last night's county board meeting. The former star midfielder will have ex-Offaly footballer Paschal Kelleghan, who he has worked alongside at club level with Rhode, as his coach, while 1999 All-Ireland U21 winning goalkeeper Cathal Mullin will be the goalkeeping coach. U20 manager Damien Gavin is expected to be one of his selectors. 

“It’s an honour and a privilege to be, first of all, considered and then passed through by the county board and the clubs so I’m absolutely delighted now to be appointed the new Westmeath manager,” Cooney said in an interview with the Westmeath GAA website.

“For years as a player representing the county and then being involved for a number of years with different management teams, it’s a lifelong interest and it’s lifelong passion and I guess the time has come now to actually take on the roll and I’m delighted to do that.”
