St Lomans Mullingar 2.09 Athlone 1.10

St Lomans made it two wins from two with a hard-earned win against Athlone in Moate on Sunday evening last. It was a keenly contested game throughout the sixty minutes with St Lomans experienced players like Ciaran Kilmurray, Kelvin Reilly, Jason O Toole and Ken Casey the stand out players for the blues.

Ryan Gaffey gave Athlone the lead in the first minute but converted frees from Ken Casey gave St Lomans the advantage, Shane Dempsey was fouled on both occasions. Points from Kieran Colclough and John Connellan levelled the game after five minutes. The blues stepped up a gear and in a three-minute spell midway through the half kicked 1.03 without reply. Kelvin Reilly and Ken Casey (free) were the point scorers with Reilly's score the result of quick free from Ken Casey. Indeed, Casey was also provider for St Lomans goal when his pass found Ciaran Kilmurray whose initial effort was saved by Athlone goalkeeper Conor Devaney before deflecting into the net off an Athlone defender.

The southsiders finished the half the stronger with four points including scores from Jack Quinn, John Stapleton and John Connellan. Shane Dempsey buried in St Lomans second goal in between these after Kelvin Reilly brilliantly won the ball out the field, he laid the ball off to Paul Sharry who in turn picked out Dempsey for a fine score. In first half stoppage time Athlone probably should have found the net but instead their effort was buried wide leaving St Lomans three points in front at the break.

St Lomans had a nightmare start to the second half conceding 1.01 in the first five minutes while also been reduced to fourteen players. The Athlone goal came when a free rebounded back into play and saw a decent finish from the Athlone wing back. The blues now had a massive challenge ahead but they stood strong to the task in hand. Ken Casey(2) and David Windsor points dragged St Lomans back in front heading into the closing stages. It was a low scoring second half but an enthralling contest. Ken Casey added two further points to extend St Lomans advantage before Athlone found themselves also reduced to fourteen players. They added two late points but St Lomans held on for a two point win.
