Westmeath defender Frank Boyle will be out of action for at least six months following surgery on a neck injury.

The long serving defender suffered the injury during the defeat to Longford in the penultimate round of the NFL Division Three campaign.

It was reported at the time that Boyle would be sidelined for a lengthy spell, but now it has been confirmed that it will be at least six months before he is ready to return to action.

Westmeath manager Colin Kelly admitted that getting Boyle back to full health was the main priority at the moment and that football was very much secondary at this stage.

"Frank had surgery on his neck and he's going to be in a brace for the next four to five weeks," said Kelly. "Frank will be out of action for up to six months and at this stage our main priority is to ensure he makes a full recovery."
