SOCCER IS ALSO STRONG IN THE CITY. HOW STRONG IS FOOTBALL AND CAN IT EVER CHALLENGE HURLING IN PLAYING NUMBERS AND POPULARITY TERMS? Football is as strong as in any other county. There are 14 senior football teams in Waterford and only 13 senior hurling. There are just as many people playing football as hurling, but we need success - improve our league standing. Something like the success of Clare or Leitrim in recent years is needed YOUR FATHER IS THE FORMER LORD MAYOR OF WATERFORD CITY: Yes, and he has a keen interest in Waterford football. He follows the county everywhere and is President of St. Saviours WATERFORD FOOTBALLERS, LIKE THE REMAINDER IN MUNSTER, HAVE LIVED IN THE SHADOW OF KERRY AND CORK. DID THE OPEN DRAW CREATE A NEW WAVE OF ENTHUSIASM WITHIN THE COUNTY? Obviously yes. Before the open draw, we could picture ourselves reaching the Munster SF semi finals but no further because of Cork and Kerry. But as Limerick showed last year, anything can happen and the prospects of going the whole way has created a buzz in the county WHO WOULD BE THE BEST FOOTBALLER ON THIS PARTICULAR WATERFORD TEAM? There are no real individuals on the team - the best footballers would be the team itself as a unit. Every team has someone you look up to for experience and Pierce White fills that role being in the county side for the past 10 or 11 years TELL US ABOUT YOUR CLUB: St. Saviours were formed in 1980 by Michael Brophy among others. Our players are drawn from the Ballybeg area of the city. Most of the present senior squad would have tasted success from under 14 through under 16, minor, under 21 and up to intermediate. We reached the county senior final in '88 and ever since have been in the semi-final stages. The hurlers won the intermediate championship last year so we are now the only club in the city with senior football and hurling outfits. Michael Brophy is our manager. We field teams at every level. Some of the senior team could have 12 or 13 championship medals at different grades. There are five St. Saviours players on the Waterford senior football team CAN YOU BEAT TIPP ON SUNDAY? Yes!
