FL4: Model County battle past Waterford

February 08, 2020

Wexford sharpshooter Ben Brosnan

Goals from Ben Brosnan and Niall Hughes earned Wexford a narrow 2-3 to 0-8 victory over Waterford in the driving wind and rain of Dungarvan.

Brosnan’s eleventh-minute goal separated the sides at the break, with the visitors ahead by 1-3 to 0-5 at the short whistle, and – down to twelve men at one stage in the second half as both goalscorers and Gavin Sheehan were all sin-binned - Paul Galvin’s charges survived a spirited effort from Na Deise to make it back-to-back wins.

Strangely, Hughes was the only outfield player to register a point for the winners, goalkeeper Ivan Meegan arrowing over two first-half frees.

The first four points where shared before Brosnan found the net with a bullet, Jason Curry (free), Jason Gleeson and Conor Murray replying for the home side only for Hughes to pop over the final point before the interval.

Wind behind them, the Slaneysiders surged four clear when Hughes netted within a minute of the restart. In abysmal conditions, the visitors wouldn’t score again but they held on for victory with just five scores in total, even though Waterford floated over the last three points.
