Waterford's Philip Mahony has announced his retirement from inter-county hurling.

The Ballygunner clubman lined out with the Deise for ten seasons and won a Munster SHC title in 2010. He was a key part of the Waterford side that claimed National League honours in 2015 and reached the All-Ireland SHC final two years later.

Still only 28, Mahony's career has been plagued by injuries having suffered two leg breaks in five years. His latest setback came against Tipperary in the Munster SHC last May.

Mahony will continue to line out for his club 'the Gunners', with whom he has won eight Waterford SHC titles and a Munster SHC crown. His brother Pauric was recently appointed captain of the county senior hurlers for 2020 by new manager Liam Cahill.
