Ballygunner forward Dessie Hutchinson wants to add a provincial club medal to the county title he won earlier this month.

Hutchinson has been a revelation since deciding to turn his back on a professional soccer career to focus on hurling.

He turned in a man of the match performance against De La Salle in the Waterford final and looks set to be called into the county squad.

First though his focus is on the Munster club SHC which begins with a trip to Clare to face champions Sixmilebridge on Sunday.

“That’s the biggest thing in Ballygunner, to drive on and be successful. People always question it in Waterford; will their hunger go? In fairness, we always come back and you look at the games down through the years in Munster, they’ve been epic battles,” Hutchinson told the Waterford News & Star.

“Especially last year against Ballyea. Ballygunner have beaten all the top teams in Munster over the past few years so we’re becoming a team that no one really want to play at the same time.

“Look, it’s not really about retaining Munster, it’s about winning it. It’s a new championship, some new players, and we still have a few young lads who have come from the minor set-up. It’s just about going all the way, but we’re not looking past Sixmilebridge.”
