Ballygunner manager Fergal Hartley revealed that it is always nice to win close games as they were pushed all the way by Cork representatives Midleton in the Munster club SHC.

The bookies had the Waterford champions at 1/10 to win this game, mainly because Midleton hadn’t won the Cork title as they were beaten by divisional side Imokilly who could not represent the county in the provincial campaign.

Ballygunner had to dig deep and were it not for a late rally, they could easily have been beaten in this one, a sentiment Hartley agreed with when speaking to the Waterford News & Star.

“There were bookies odds that didn’t make sense and we knew they didn’t make sense,” stated Hartley. “We played Midleton earlier on in the year and they beat us, so we knew how good they were.

“They were beaten by Imokilly in a county final but Imokilly are probably the best club team in the country. They’re a group team, they have seventeen clubs. We knew exactly what we were going to get. That was skin of your teeth stuff. They’re the games you love coming through.”
