Westmeath hurlers in New York dedicate success to late club-mate

The Westmeath Football & Hurling Club in New York retire the number 9 jersey in honour of their late club-mate Dermot Kenny.

Last November, members of the Westmeath Football & Hurling Club in New York were left devastated by the tragic death of Dermot Kenny.

Dermot was a star hurler for his native Delvin in the 1980s and 1990s before moving to the Big Apple where he ran a successful construction business. He continued to line out for the Westmeath club in New York and was named Club Person of the Year in 2016.

Dermot was on every Westmeath player's mind yesterday after they beat Ulster by 1-16 to 2-9 in Gaelic Park to be crowned New York junior hurling champions.

"Well he was looking down on us all year and we did it for him, rest easy buddy," said the club, who retired Dermot's number 9 jersey for the season as a way of honouring his memory.
