Diarmuid Connolly was due back in Dublin this morning following his summer adventure in the US where he starred for Donegal Boston in their recent Boston SFC success.

Yesterday, Donegal Boston manager Padraic McLaughlin appealed to the Irish media in a tweet to 'protect genius' Connolly. There is no doubt that the gifted St. Vincent's clubman has had a hard time from sections of the media since he received a 12-week suspension for an incident involving linesman Ciaran Branagan during Dublin's Leinster SFC quarter-final win over Carlow last year.

Connolly has since made just two appearances as a substitute for the Dubs and missed out on the chance to win a sixth All-Ireland medal last Sunday when they defeated Tyrone to complete a four-in-a-row of Sam Maguires. Afterwards, manager Jim Gavin indicated that the door remained opened for the forward to make a return to the Dublin fold in 2019.

Buncrana native McLaughlin also described Connolly as a "gent of a man" and "pure unadulterated class".
