Thomas McCurtains GAA Club Notes

July 20, 2017

A hugely successful day was had on Saturday as McCurtains hosted our Annual Family Fun Day. The day started off with Hurling Go Games hosted by London GAA County Board. With over 50 players from all over Britain the games showcased the future of Hurling in Britain. A massive thanks to Erin go Bragh for making the journey from Birmingham.

Next up were the Camogs who were playing their British Intermediate Championship Semi-Final against Tara. A fantastic start from the East London Ladies saw them score a goal and a point without reply. Tara found their way in to the game scoring some well taken points. It was nip and tuck the whole way through the second half. The game went right to the wire with a only a point in it in the last few mins. Thomas McCurtains had chances to nick it in the end but Taras kept them at bay and managed to score the last insurance point to run out winners by 2 points. The girls have played some fantastic games this year and we wish them luck in their remaining league games this year.

Over 250 children from over 10 clubs participated in football from u-6 to u-14 including St Finbars who travelled down from Coventry. McCurtains entered an u-6 team, an u-8 team, an u-10 team and a combination u-12/14 team.

Winners of the age groups were as follows:

u-8 Cup - North London Shamrocks

u-8 Shield - Thomas McCurtains

u-10 Cup - St Clarets

u-10 Shield - Parnells

u-12 - St Kiernans

u-14 Cup - St Finbars

The Hurlers finished off the action on the pitch with a bruising game against Fulham Irish in their opening Championship game of 2017. In a low scoring first half McCurtains struggled against the wind but still managed to go in ahead at half time (0-05 to 1-01). After the break McCurtains used the wind better knocking over some fantastic long range points, the pick of which came from Mick O'Leary. Things got a bit niggly towards the end and a second Fulham Irish goal put a dent in Macs lead but never looked like threatening the final outcome.

Winners of the big draw were as follows:

Aimee Higgins - 2 Flights to New York

Richie Browne - All Ireland Football Ticket

James O'Rourke - All Ireland Hurling Ticket

A huge thanks to everyone who volunteered to help out in organising the event and on the day. Without them the day would not have been a success.

On Sunday the footballers received a walkover from Brothers Pearse in the final league game. This confirms that they will be playing in the Division 3 final on the 30th July and are promoted to Division 2 for next year.
