HL1: Hogan the hero for Waterford

Galway's Sean Bleahane looks to put pressure on Waterford's Jack Prendergast

Waterford 0-17

Galway 0-16

A late point from half-time substitute Peter Hogan handed Waterford their third Allianz Hurling League Division 1 victory at Galway's expense in Walsh Park.

Pauric Mahony's contribution of 0-8 also proved crucial in a contest which had been level eight times before Ballygunner clubman Hogan fired over the winner. Galway were left to rue 13 wides, including two from Jason Flynn and Sean Loftus after Hogan had edged the home side ahead. They badly missed the scoring prowess of Joe Canning, who was replaced by Brian Concannon at centre forward, while captain Padraic Mannion went off injured after only 18 minutes.

Liam Cahill's men signalled their intent with early points from Patrick Curran and Stephen Bennett before Concannon and Sean Loftus restored parity for the Westerners. It was nip-and-tuck from there until late in the first half when Conor Whelan, Tadhg Haran, Sean Bleahene and Concannon traded scores with Jack Fagan and Austin Gleeson. But four unanswered points from Calum Lyons, Mahony and Kevin Moran sent the Deise into the break with a 0-11 to 0-8 advantage.

Haran and Cathal Mannion reduced the deficit to the minimum after the restart before the hosts reeled off four more without reply per Mahony (three) and Jamie Barron to open up a 0-15 to 0-10 lead.

Conor Whelan's third and fourth points from play narrowed the gap before Mahony gave Waterford some breathing space again. But Galway fought back to level thanks to two points each from Evan Niland and Mannion before Hogan struck late to send the vast majority of the 3,662 spectators home happy.
