When introduced as a substitute during the Waterford SHC final last weekend, Ballygunner’s Wayne Hutchinson was playing in his 17th county final.

In what is a remarkable achievement, Hutchinson picked up his ninth county medal, alongside his brothers JJ and Dessie who was playing in his first final.

The elder Hutchinson was a minor when Ballygunner won the 2001 title, but he has been part of the squad ever since seeing many highs and some lows along the way.

Of course, the 34-year-old has some way to go to win as many county medals as Armagh and Crossmaglen legend Paul Hearty who has 17 senior club titles to his name, while last Sunday Portlaoise talisman ‘Bruno’ McCormack picked up his 16th title (fifteen in football and one hurling).

All three Hutchinson’s finished the game with younger brother Dessie scoring 1-03 and picking up the man of the match award in what was a great day for their family.
