Mattie Kenny won't be the next Galway hurling manager after confirming that he is sticking with Dublin for another year.

The Abbey/Duniry clubman had been one of the favourites to replace Micheál Donoghue, whose resignation on Tuesday took the Galway hurling fraternity by surprise. But Kenny, who managed Cuala to back-to-back All-Ireland club titles in 2017 and 2018 after coaching Galway, informed the Irish Independent that he will be continuing in his role as Dublin manager.

Kenny was appointed Dublin manager for a three-year term last November and it's understood that he intends to honour that commitment. He led the Dubs to promotion from Division 1 of the Allianz League last spring before plotting his native county's downfall in the Leinster SHC and eliminating them from the All-Ireland race. However, that was followed by a shock All-Ireland SHC preliminary quarter-final loss to Laois.

Jeff Lynskey, who won three minor All-Irelands with Galway in the last four years, and this year's All-Ireland minor winning supremo Brian Hanley, continue to be heavily linked with the vacancy.
