Wexford’s Matthew O'Hanlon was delighted by how the Model County dug deep to see off 14-man Tipperary in Round Three of the national hurling league on Sunday.

Despite having Noel McGrath dismissed before the break, the Premier County led almost from start to finish at Wexford Park, only for Davy Fitzgerald’s charges to finally get their noses in front right at the death, courtesy of Aidan Nolan’s clinching injury-time strike.

“We knew directly after half time they were going to come with whatever they had, try and get up a bit of a lead and hold on to it. In fairness they did that, they got three or four scores directly after half time,” joint-captain O’Hanlon told The Irish Independent.

“But we dug deep, I thought we used the ball really well and we tried to make the numerical advantage play to our favour. At the end, we just really fought it out and dug it out. The difficult and hard balls that needed to be won were won by us, and we were coming out with them.

“We grabbed the momentum at the very end. We were delighted to get the win by a point. The league is about building, a lot of guys got a chance there so we were delighted to get that win at home in front of that crowd.”
