Westmeath hurling star 'Jogger' can play football too

Westmeath's outstanding hurling full back Tommy 'Jogger' Doyle could be on new football manager Jack Cooney's radar after scoring 3-3 in a JFC match yesterday.

'Jogger' was the star of the show as he helped Ballycomoyle to a surprise JFC quarter-final victory over their north Westmeath rivals Castletown-Finea/Coole/Whitehall. Ballycomoyle will now face championship favourites Ballynacargy in the semi-final next weekend and all eyes will be on 'Jogger' who is very much in the Kieran Donaghy mould.

Hailing from a staunch hurling family - his father of the same name played full back for Westmeath in the 1980s - Doyle's first love is the small ball code and he memorably held Seamus Callanan scoreless when Westmeath ran Tipperary close in last year's All-Ireland SHC qualifier in Thurles.

But if he keeps producing performances like the one he gave yesterday in Kinnegad, new Westmeath hurling boss Joe Quaid won't be the only county manager seeking his services next year.
