Micheal Donoghue cut a contended figure after Galway opened their Leinster SHC defence with a 5-18 to 2-15 victory over Offaly in Tullamore.

The Tribesmen won the All-Ireland last year without scoring a goal in their last four games, but they put that right by raising five green flags through Joseph Cooney, Brian Concannon (two), Conor Whelan and Jason Flynn last evening. And but for the heroics of Offaly 'keeper Eoghan Cahill, they could have scored eight.

"It was obviously something we were conscious of last year," the Galway manager said. 

"It wasn't that we weren't creating the goal chances. It is a work-on. Ye boys (the media) keep highlighting it as well for us. With the forwards we have they are well capable of creating goal chances. We were just lucky that the boys took them."

Donoghue hailed the peformance of 2015 All-Ireland minor winner Concannon, who bagged 2-1 on his championship debut.

"He took his opportunity. He had been going well in training and deservedly started. Took his scores well. Worked hard."

Galway will have next weekend off before welcoming Allianz League champions Kilkenny to Pearse Stadium for their next game in the round-robin series in a fortnight's time.
