Laois manager Eamonn Kelly admits that they are relieved to have retained their 1B status.

A two-point win over Antrim in last Sunday's NHL 1B relegation play-off ensures that the O'Moore County remain in the hurling league's second tier for another year.

And Kelly admitted to the Leinster Express that they were eager to retain their 1B status as he felt it would have been a massive step backwards to have been relegated.

"We didn't want to go down, we wanted to stay up there because we're hoping the hurling we're playing at this level will stand to us, we have a very young panel and you're better off hurling at a higher level," said Kelly.

The Laois manager added that they will be training throughout the month of April, despite it being designated for clubs only.

"There won't be any weeks off. There are four league games in Laois and the lads will be playing all of them with their clubs, and we'll be training twice a week."
