'Something has to change'

Seán Cavanagh has added his weight to calls for a two-tier football championship.

The former Tyrone star says 'something has to change' after watching yesterday's one-sided Connacht SFC semi-final between Galway and Sligo.

He asked on the Sunday Game: "What positives can you take from a system where Galway beat London and Sligo to get to a Connacht final? And then you look at the game in Ulster today (Down v Armagh) and last night (Cavan v Monaghan) and what an Ulster side typically has to go through to get to a final.

"It highlights an unfair system that is there. We all know it, it just means an awful lot of games in the months of May and June are really irrelevant to the championship.

"Something has to change. Ok, maybe not get rid of the provincials but look at a second tier after round 1 or 2 of the qualifiers.

"If you look at the way hurling is run in the last couple of years, it only hastens the requirement that we now have to do something to help football in May and June."
