FL1: Tribe reaffirm superiority over Rossies

March 16, 2019

Galway's Gary O'Donnell goes up with with Roscommon's Tadhg O'Rourke

Danny Cummins netted on the stroke of half time for Galway, who defeated Connacht rivals Roscommon by 1-17 to 1-10 at Salthill.

Victory keeps the Connacht champions in the chase for back-to-back league final appearances, while the Rossies are staring relegation in the face – they need to get something from Kerry next weekend to have any chance of staying up.

Cummins’ goal on 33 minutes was followed by a brace of Shane Walsh frees as Kevin Walsh’s men finished the opening period strongly to claim a 1-11 to 0-7 interval lead.

With the wind behind them, the Rossies rallied after John Daly and Walsh pointed upon the resumption and their top scorer Conor Cox tucked away a 46th-minute penalty to claw them back within five. But the impressive Antaine O’Laoi steered over two frees and Gary O’Donnell nailed his second score as the hosts remained unruffled.

Between them, Cummins, O’Laoi and Walsh contributed 1-10 for the winners, who have now won four times in this year's national football league, with a trip to Omagh to take on Tyrone beckoning in the last round.
