Roscommon midfielder Ultan Harney is targeting consolidating their place in NFL 1 this year.

The Rossies return to the top flight after a year’s absence and Harney stressed to the Westmeath Independent that the aim was to avoid relegation.

An away clash against Mayo this Saturday night is a tough opener for Roscommon, but Harney believes that a good start to the campaign is imperative.

“The goal in the league is to stay up,” said Harney. “You don’t want to be going back down. You need to be there consistently over a couple of years to get a foothold up there.

The bookies have installed Roscommon and Cavan as the favourites for the drop, but Harney is confident that they can upset the odds.

“Realistically, you want to be up in Division 1 if you’re to progress as a county, as a team over the years. You don’t see many teams winning provincial titles or getting to All-Ireland semi-finals without being in Division 1. You need to be up at that standard consistently.”
