All Star Ryan McHugh made his first appearance for Donegal since last August in last night’s comfortable Dr McKenna Cup victory over Cavan.

The Kilcar clubman was back in his familiar number five jersey for the Ulster champions as they handed the Breffni men a 1-20 to 1-12 defeat at Ballybofey, where he lasted 64 minutes and contributed a point from play in a solid performance.

Last month McHugh revealed that he’d suffered a bleed on the brain after repeated concussions mounted up for him last season, having picked up three separate knocks against Dublin, Kildare and Tyrone the All-Ireland championship race.

In September, the 24-year-old suffered another blow whilst on club duty in a challenge match against St Vincent’s and, after receiving results from a CT scan, was advised by his doctor to take a rest from the game.

After making a first appearance for his county in five months, McHugh is set to line-out again on Sunday when Declan Bonner’s men take on Armagh in a bid to return to the McKenna Cup final.
