Offaly midfielder Eoin Carroll is in a race against time to be fit for the Leinster SFC opener against Wicklow on May 13 after suffering an injury setback.

The Cappincur clubman underwent reconstruction surgery on his left knee last summer and had returned as a substitute in the Faithful County's Allianz League defeat to Armagh earlier this month. However, he suffered cartilage damage to the same knee during training recently and was due to have further surgery this week.

"The young lad just has no luck at the moment. We just got him back on the field against Armagh and now he has to go for an operation on Tuesday," Offaly manager Stephen Wallace told the Tullamore Tribune after last weekend's league win over Wexford.

"Hopefully they won't open up his knee and find something else. If it is cartilage, Eoin has a chance to get back in three or four weeks. He has had no luck, he is 23 years of age and his heart is broke. You would feel for the kid. He wants to play football and he will do everything in his power to get back."
