New York's Larry McCarthy will be the next GAA President after being elected at Congress tonight.

The Bishopstown, Co. Cork native was voted in on the fourth count at Croke Park as he beat off stiff competition from Jarlath Burns of Armagh, 142 to 132.

A member of the Sligo football club in New York, McCarthy will be the 40th President of the Association with his three-year term beginning in 2021.

Jim Bolger (Carlow), Jerry O'Sullivan (Cork) and Mick Rock (Roscommon) were the other candidates in the running to replace John Horan.

McCarthy is currently a member of the GAA’s Management Committee and served on the Strategic Review Committee last year.

He also previously served as New York GAA chairman and secretary having emigrated to the Big Apple in 1985.

As a player, McCarthy won an All-Ireland club football title with Limerick's Thomond College in 1978.
