The death occurred on August 7th of Sam Melbourne (91) in Dublin and formerly of Curraheen, Horse & Jockey. He had a life long interest in sports and his GAA memorabilia made him famous. He displayed his vast collection throughout the country. It became an icon for all to view. He started in Thurles in his sports shop in Friar Street in the 1950s and continued the collection of items throughout his life. The collection is now available in Lar na Pairce and the Library in Thurles. In his youth he played hurling and also competed in cycling and athletics, the latter sport with the old Coolcroo AC. AT the time of his death he was Vice President of the Moycarkey Borris GAA club. His funeral took place in Dublin and was attended by many Tipperary sports personnel. He is survived by his wife, children, relatives and may friends. May he rest in peace.
