Ryan, Dinny

October 01, 2009
The local community was saddened to learn on Monday of the passing of Denis (Dinny) Ryan, a member of one of Tipperary's best known hurling dynasties.

From a famed local hurling family, Dinny and his two brothers Mick and Jack all figured prominently in the Blue and Gold of Tipperary, and will be remembered for playing their part in the great All-Ireland three-in-a-row of 1949, '50, and '51.

The annexing of the All-Ireland 'treble' marked one of the golden periods in the history of Tipperary hurling and Roscrea club and community are very proud of the contribution of the Ryan brothers to it. Like his brothers Mick and Jack, Dinny gave outstanding service to Roscrea hurling. They played a privotal role in the forties and fifties. Roscrea captured North senior hurling titles in 1945 and 49, adding to the achievements of 1936, '37, '39, '41 and '42. The club also clinched the divisional senior crown in 1954.

News of Dinny Ryan's passing caused widespread regret. His loss is a huge cross to bear for his family, and many friends in the Roscrea area and the GAA fraternity in County Tipperary and further afield. His popularity was borne in the large and representative congregations at the funeral ceremonies on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning. Many leading GAA officials, as well as players, former and current from a number of counties paid their respects to the late Dinny. Rosary was recited at his home in Sheehills at 9pm on Tuesday evening and his remains were removed to St Cronan's Church at 12.30pm on Wednesday. Following Requiem Mass interment took place in the adjoining cemetery.

Pre-deceased by his wife Maura, deceased is survived by his daughter, sons, sisters, brothers, relatives, and friends to whom sincere sympathy is extended.
