The funeral has taken place of well known and highly respected former Sligo County Councillor and businessman, Patrick (Mixer) Carty. Mr Carty (90), Burma Road, Strandhill and formerly of Bundoran and Coolera, died at Summerville nursing home, Strandhill. He served as an Independent Fianna Fail member of the County Council from 1985 to 1991. Mr Carty was predeceased by his late wife, June and his late daughter, Ann (Britton) eight years ago, and is survived by his sons, Paul, Patrick and Kevin and daughters, Jane and Lynn, brother, Brendan and sisters Annie-May, Rita and Kathleen and a large circle of friends and neighbours. Funeral mass was at St.Patrick's Church, Strandhill, yesterday, Tuesday, and burial took place at Scarden Cemetery. Described by all those who knew him as a colourful, cheerful character, full of life and who loved a chat and a joke ,'Mixer' Carty was born in Coolera in 1917 into a family of ten. His late sister, Rosie Kelly, was a prominent Fianna Fail supporter, while his late brother, Owen, was one of Sligo's first major housing scheme builders. 'Mixer' worked with Owen for a number of years and on moving to live in Bundoran he was one of the town's most prominent and respected businessmen, running the then 'Bonanza' bar, now the Phoenix. Mr Carty also served for a number of years on Bundoran Town Council. He then returned to Strandhill approximately thirty years ago to live on the Burma Road. Sportsman Apart from his great spirit of community, Mr Carty was also a keen sportsman and fan. He was a member of Strandhill Golf Club and loved football and greyhounds. He was a member of the Coolera team which won the county league in 1942 and also played in 1940 and 1946 and was a member of Coolera/Strandhill GAA club. His late father, Patrick, was captain of the last Coolera team to win the Sligo senior football championship in 1907, prior to Coolera/Strandhill's historic success in 2005. He was elected to the then Strandhill/Ballymote electoral area on Sligo County Council in 1985 and served up to 1991. His nephew, Gerry Healy, took a seat for Fianna Fail in the Sligo west ward electoral area in '91 and Mr Carty's niece, Deirdre Healy-McGovern is a serving Fianna Fail Councillor for the Sligo/Strandhill area. His funeral yesterday was large and representative with members of Sligo County Council, Coolera/Strandhill GAA club, Strandhill Golf Club, forming a guard of honour. - courtesy of the Sligo Champion, 19th December 2007
