Senior: The Seniors continue to prepare for Round 3 of the Senior Championship which is due to take place on the weekend of August 11/12. Training for all panel members continues this week on Tuesday and Thursday at 7.00pm.
Junior: The Juniors played Bunninadden in Tubbercurry last Sunday afternoon in the second round of the Junior A Championship drawing on a scoreline of St. Mary's 1-6 Bunninadden 1-6. This was a much improved team performance from recent matches aided by the return to the fold of some experienced players. Having led for most of the match and defended stoutly throughout, Bunninadden scored a late goal to snatch a draw. Best for Mary's on the day was Stephen Keenan who was excellent throughout. The Juniors return to Division 4 League action this Friday night when they travel to Oxfield to face Drumcliffe/Rosses Point in the final round of the League with promotion still a possibility. We ask supporters to come out and get behind the team (Throw-in 8pm). Training for all Junior panel members continues this week.
Senior/Junior Membership: Membership for Senior and Junior players is due immediately. All players must complete the club registration form and forward full payment. It is the responsibility of each player to ensure they complete this process.
Saturday Morning Coaching 2012: Coaching for children aged between 5 and 12 years continues each Saturday in Kent Park, throughout the summer. The Saturday sessions have been attended in large numbers since they commenced in April and all of the children, girls and boys, are receiving top quality coaching in a fun and safe environment. Why not let your child try Gaelic Football this summer? The coaching commences at 10.45am each Saturday morning and finishes at 12:00. They can try it out without any commitment. Minor: The Minor A Championship commenced last Thursday evening with a home fixture versus near neighbours St. John's. In what was a poor match, Mary's led at half time on a scoreline of St. Mary's 1-2 St. John's 0-2 with the home side spurning a number of missed opportunities during the opening period. The second half was a close affair but a missed penalty by Mary's gave the visitors renewed vigour and two goals for St. John's gave them a deserved draw on a scoreline of St. Mary's 1-7 St. John's 2-4. Training continues this week.
U-16: The U-16 championship continued on Monday evening, July 30th, with an away fixture against a well drilled Calry/St. Joseph's side. See next weeks notes for match result and report. Training continues this week.
U-14: The U-14 'A' team commenced their A Championship campaign last Friday evening at Kent Park against Owenmore Gaels/Ballisodare losing on a scoreline of St. Mary's 2-6 Owenmore Gaels 3-9. Well done to all the players and management team. Attention now turns to the A Championship which commences this Friday evening with a home fixture versus Owenmore Gaels/Ballisodare (Throw-in 7pm). Please come out and support the team.
U-12: The U-12s were due to travel to take on Curry on Tuesday July 31st. Training continues this week.
Calling all Cyclists: St. Mary's are organising a sponsored cycle from Croagh Patrick to our clubhouse to take place on Saturday 8th September, with donations to Our Ladies Children's Hospital Crumlin, and North West Hospice. The cycle will be followed by a fun day for parents and children. Anyone interested in taking part please email chairperson.stmarys.sligo@gaa.ie or secretary.stmarys.sligo@gaa.ie. Huge interest has already been generated around this event so if you are keen to take part, why not dust of the bike, oil that chain and give us a shout. We'd be delighted to hear from anyone interested in taking part in this cycle and it's open to all.
Tag Gaelic: As part of the GAA's sports and social programme, St. Mary's are hosting a TAG Gaelic competition on Friday evenings for a number of weeks. The emphasis here is on fun and social enjoyment of Gaelic Football, and anyone who is interested can contact Gavin Cawley, co-ordinator or Kevin Molloy Club Chairman, or log into www.facebook.com/TagGaelicSligo for details. To-date this has generated quite a bit of interest locally and in the North West, so my not contact us to register. Teams are mixed.
County Fundraising Draw: St Mary's are currently supporting the county fund raising draw for the new centre of excellence in Cumeen. Anyone who is interested in supporting this fundraiser can contact any of the committee members. Tickets are €60 each or 2 for €100. All tickets must be returned this week as the Draw takes place over the weekend, it is important that all tickets are sold.
Pitch-side Signage: Anybody interested in advertising their business on our pitch-side signage please contact Ultan Smith on 086 2587389. The pitch-side signage provides a great opportunity for local businesses to advertise their business in the community at an affordable price.
County Scene: Commiserations to Johnny Martyn, Johnny Davey, Mark Breheny and Stephen Coen and the Sligo Senior Squad on their defeat to Kildare in Round 4 of the All Ireland Qualifiers last Saturday evening in Roscommon.
