Drumcliffe/Rosses club notes

August 20, 2018

Commiserations to Sinéad Regan, Michelle McNamara and the Sligo ladies footballers who lost out narrowly to Tyrone after an epic All-Ireland intermediate semi-final in Ballyshannon last Monday. Both girls started the match and played their hearts out. The age profile of this Sligo team is very young so the future looks bright at intercounty level.

Sinéad and Michelle will now turn their attention to helping the DRP ladies intermediate footballers begin their club championship campaign this Sunday morning (Aug 26th) when they travel to south Sligo to play CT Gaels at 10am. DRP are one of six teams in the intermediate championship this year, which is being run off on a round-robin basis. The top two teams will qualify for the county final.

The junior men's football team made light work of the heavy rain at Oxfield last Saturday to beat Castleconnor by 2-12 to 0-1 and qualify for the knock stages of the 'B' championship. Joseph Keyes scored 1-4 and Alan O'Dowd 1-2 as DRP made it two wins out of two to clinch top spot in Group 2. Congratulations also to team member Fergal McGrath who recently 'tied the knot' with his fiancee Maria Boland.

This Saturday evening, the attentions turns to the senior team once again as they take on neighbours St Molaise Gaels in a vital Belfry senior club championship Group 2 match at Kent Park (6:30pm). The team need a win to secure a place in the quarter-finals. The losers will face a championship relegation play-off. The players and management would really appreciate big club support for this important game.

Benbulben Gaels minor hurlers created a little piece of history last Thursday evening when they produced a performance of huge commitment and intensity to beat Tourlestrane in Tourlestrane in the minor championship by 3-4 to 2-6. The result is the team's first championship win at this grade. A good week for the team's manager John O'Callaghan turned into a mighty one at Croke Park three days later when John watched his native Limerick lift the Liam McCarthy Cup for the first time in 45 years. Enjoy the celebrations John. We may not see him for some time!

Our U12 hurlers did the club proud last Tuesday evening in a keenly contested U12  'B' league final at Scarden before losing out to opponents Naomh Eoin by 17 scores to 9. It was a fair achievement for this young team to reach the decider. Special mention to our new recruit Paddy Healy from Lower Rosses who played his part in the final. Paddy comes from good Carlow hurling stock and it's great to have him on board.

The U14 hurlers host Castleconnor in the championship at Oxfield this Wednesday evening. Throw-in: 7pm.

The girls U14 footballers produced an excellent performance in the championship last Monday evening at Hazelwood as they recorded a 13-12 to 6-14 win over Calry/St Joseph's.

The boys U14 footballers picked up their second consecutive win in the 'B' championship with an impressive 1-10 to 1-3 success away to Curry last Friday evening. They play Tourlestrane at home next Monday evening.

The boys U16 footballers completed the round robin section of the U16 'A' championship last Monday evening, going down to a fine St Molaise Gaels team by 4-11 to 1-9. We now face a play-off to make the county final. Details of that play-off had still to be finalised at the time of writing.

The girls U16 footballers will play their next championship game against Calry St Joseph's on Thursday, August 30th.

The club meeting for August takes place next Monday 27th in Oxfield at 9am.

Members and supporters are asked to please return their completed Lotto tickets for the 2018/19 season to any club officer at or before this meeting.
If you would like to buy a ticket to support this important club fundraiser, please contact Club Treasurer Mary Carway or any DRP club officer.

GAA nursery coaching on Saturday mornings has resumed  at Oxfield after the Summer break. New players are always very welcome to come along and give it a try. Details of the session times etc. are available on the club website drp.gaa.ie.

Big congratulations to all our younger club members who represented the Rosses Point and Drumcliffe areas with such distinction at the national Community Games finals in Limerick at the weekend. There were terrific gold medals for the Rosses Point girls Pitch & Putt team, and for Drumcliffe's Nicola Dunleavy in cycling, but all our local competitors were a credit to their families and home areas.
