The late Martin Murray Snr.
Great sadness fell over the Fuerty and surrounding areas with the passing of Martin Murray Snr. of Castlestrange. The parish has lost one of its great parishioners and indeed a true gentleman. A dedicated husband and father, Martin was held in high esteem and this was shown in January 2007 when Fuerty GAA voted him in as President of the Club, the highest honour it can bestow on one of its members.
His love of Gaelic games down through the years stayed with Martin right until the end and he was proud of the part he played in keeping Fuerty football afloat in the years gone by. A renowned player in his day, he was full-back on the famous Fuerty team that won 29 out of 30 games from early 1949 to capturing the junior championship in 1950. He brought pride to the club when he lined out for the county team in the 1950s. He also trained many underage teams in the club when he retired from the game. Indeed July 2006 was a very proud day for Martin when he attended the official opening of Mulhern Park. He was delighted to see the minors triumph in 2006.
A guard of honour from Fuerty GAA Club carried his remains to his final resting place in Fuerty Cemetery. Martin is survived by his wife Rita, sons Seamus, Thomas, Martin Jnr. and Noel, sisters Peg and Kathleen, brother in law Tom, daughters on law Claire, Ann and Mary, his grandchildren, extended family and many friends.
