The Late Christy Murray
I was shocked to learn in a letter from Colm O'Callaghan during the week of the death of Christy Murray from Ballintubber. Christy was a member of the 1941 All-Ireland minor winning team.
A native of Ballintubber, Christy spent most of his life in Sligo. Indeed, I was privileged to have known him during my own time living in Sligo. We had many a chat about Roscommon football in the golden era of the 1940s. I had no idea that he had died until I got Colm's letter.
He featured strongly in the glorious era of Roscommon CBS 1939-'42. On leaving school he went to UCD where he qualified with a degree in Agricultural Science. In later years, he was appointed Chief Agricultural Officer for County Sligo. He held this post until his retirement. May he rest in peace.
Colm kindly sent me a copy of the book 'Six Glorious Years' which was written by his late brother, Micheál O'Callaghan, former editor of this paper. He says, 'in response to many requests I got 500 copies re-issed in the early 1990s. I have half a dozen copies at present and anybody who wants a copy can have same by ringing 090 6626744".
I am indebted to Colm for his letter and the copy of the book. He goes on to say: "The late Sean Naughton, our minor goalie in 1939, also features in the book. He also played hurling for CBS, Connacht Champions 1938-'39 when they beat the kingpins of Connacht, St Mary's of Galway.
Five members of that team helped Connacht win the All-Ireland hurling title in 1941. They were Phelim Murray, Gerry Kilduff, Liam Carlos, Michael Brennan and Michael Lohan."
