The Late Richard Canny Snr

There was huge sadness in Loughglynn and throughout counties of Roscommon and Galway with the news of the passing of Richard Canny Snr on Tuesday April 26th. Mr Canny was extremely well-known in sporting circles throughout the county, especially with this close association with Eire Og GAA Club. One of the club's founding fathers, Mr Canny held a number of positions with the club including secretary, vice-chairperson and President of the club, a distinction he was extremely proud of.

Born in Corlacken, Creggs, he emigrated to England in the 1950s and married his wife Kitty Fitzpatrick in 1966. Mr Canny worked as a builder throughout his adult life and whilst in England spent the majority of his time in Manchester. GAA was always something that remained close to his heart while in England and travelled to Croke Park to see Galway playing as often as possible in 1960s.

He also set up a GAA team while in Doncaster and was extremely proud of his Irish heritage. The father of six returned to Ireland with his family in 1976 and set up home in Loughglynn and became heavily involved with Michael Glaveys and following on from this in the 1980s with Eire Og. Mr Canny will be fondly remembered as being hugely involved in the local community and parish events. He had a deep religious faith in a private way and cherished his family.

Plans are already afoot to stage an annual football game in Richard Canny Snr's memory between Eire Og and Creggs. Mr Canny is sadly missed by his loving wife Kitty, daughters Catherine and Patricia. Sons Richard Jnr, Thomas, James and Matthew. Daughters in law, Sons in law, his beloved Grandchildren.

Brothers Eddie, Frank and Vincent. Nieces, Nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends. Pre-decesed by his sister Evelyn and brother John. Funeral mass took place on Friday last at The Church Of Our Lady of Good Counsel, Loughglynn with burial in Cuiltyboe cemetery.
May he rest in peace.
