Roscommon captain Enda Smith admits that they want to prove themselves in this year’s Super 8’s.

The Rossies have not had the best of records in the All-Ireland series over the past couple of years, suffering some heavy defeats.

They embark on another last eight campaign this weekend with the hosting of Tyrone at Dr Hyde Park this Saturday afternoon.

Following that they have a tough test in Croke Park against Dublin, before finishing the group stages of the Super 8’s with an away clash against Cork.

Roscommon won Connacht the hard way this year beating both Mayo and Galway on their way to the title, but now they must step it up again and Smith is confident that they can gain some sort of redemption for previous campaigns, starting with a win over Tyrone this weekend.

“Embarrassment is a strong word, but it definitely felt like that,” was Smith’s thought’s on last year’s Super 8’s heavy defeats to Tyrone and Dublin when speaking to the Roscommon Herald.

“Croke Park is the worst place to be when you get a bad beating. You’re confident going in, but as it gets on in the series things get harder and you don’t get that open space.”

He added: “People may have thought that ’17 was a flash in the pan that we’d gone now for a few years and that they wouldn’t have to worry about us.

“So to do it again and back it up this year and I suppose the manner in which we did it being down by five points at half time against Galway – definitely breeds confidence.”
