Roscommon forward Diarmuid Murtagh has revealed that there was a time when he questioned whether or not he would be playing again.

Murtagh scored the all-important goal for the Rossies as they caused something of a surprise by defeating the defending champions Galway at Pearse Stadium last Sunday.

Only a few months ago, Murtagh’s playing days were in doubt as he lay in bed having had eye surgery.

“Just when the final whistle went, it was very emotional for me,” Murtagh told the Roscommon Herald.

“When I was sitting in the hospital bed, after eye surgery, I didn’t think I’d ever get back playing. It means a lot to me to be here, to be part of this Roscommon group. I’m delighted the manager has a lot of trust in me as well.”
