Ex-Roscommon star punches his way to Golden Gloves final in New York

Roscommon's Donal Ward

Former Roscommon footballer Donal Ward has qualified for the New York Ring Masters finals, formally known as The New York Golden Gloves.

Ward, who represented the Rossies between 2010 and 2015, lined out at full-back for New York against Leitrim in the Connacht championship last year in a clash which saw the hosts losing out by a point in extra time in the Bronx.

Following the defeat, Ward retired from football to focus on boxing, joining the prestigious New York Athletic Club, and his latest victory over Hosam Abdeldayem in Brooklyn means he will now be fighting at the world-famous Madison Square Garden venue on April 19th.

The Queens-based boxer becomes the first Irish man to fight in a Golden Gloves final since Westmeath’s Alo Kelly.
