Cunningham ratified as new Roscommon boss

The wait for a new senior football manager in Roscommon is finally over after Anthony Cunningham was ratified to the position at an emergency county board meeting tonight.

Cunningham has been appointed for an initial two-year term, with the option of a third year.

It brings to an end a long drawn-out process of finding a successor to Kevin McStay who announced his resignation 65 days ago following three years in charge of the Rossies.

Cunningham provides a wealth of experience having won two All-Ireland SHC medals as a player with his native Galway in 1987 and 1988 while he managed Roscommon's St Brigid's and Garrycastle of Westmeath to county and provincial success.

At inter-county level, he managed the Galway U21 and senior hurling teams to All-Ireland final appearances. The St. Thomas' man was also previously involved with the Dublin senior hurlers and the Laois senior footballers as selector and coach, respectively.

Incidentally, it was Roscommon who gave Cunningham his first job in inter-county management with the county's senior hurlers in 2004.
