What boot studs should you choose

There has been a significant increase in knee injuries in junior and senior players in Rugby / GAA, Camogie, football & hurling. Many of these injuries can be prevented by small changes in the footwear of the players, the recent trend is to wear boots with triangular studs , when the foot is planted in the ground the player tries to rotate the foot and the foot due to the triangular stud is staying planted in the ground , thus causing a severe rotation of the knee joint where injury is then sustained( particularly ACL/PLC Ruptures) .With a rounded stud the stud rotates effectively and the knee is rotating in line with the foot therefore no excessive pressure is put on the knee joint. It may be worth thinking about when purchasing your next pair of boots. 

Cut the Queues

One of the most annoying sights in coaching is a long queue of players lining up to take part in a drill or an exercise.

Who can state a valid reason for a queue of 8, 9 or 10 players [or more], each waiting in turn for two seconds of action?

All coaches, when designing drills or exercises, should look carefully at how the WORK: REST RATIO pans out.

If an exercise means that a player has 2-3 seconds of movement for a ball, followed by 30-40 seconds of lining up for the next bus,

there is something wrong with the drill set-up. Think the exercise through and divide the group or increase the

number of footballs being used - do anything except let the queue continue to form and the players continue to lose out!

 

If the drill involves jogging, a good rule of thumb is a work: rest ratio of 1:1. Should the emphasis be on speed, then set a ratio of 1:4 or 1:5. 

 

In effect, this means that you simply include two players in a queue for the jogging exercise and five or six players maximum in the speed drill. The

numbers used will determine the work: rest ratio. 

 

 

 

U8 & U10 Camogie:  Training continues as normal 6.30pm Friday evenings. 

 

U12 Camogie:   
The Eagles played the Hawks in the third round of the County U12 competition. It is always a tough match to play each other but it was a very competitive, skilful and free flowing encounter. The two teams racked up a total of 23 scores as the game ebbed and flowed one way and then the other. It was clear to see that the hard work being put in at training is paying off as the girls competed for every ball and several players on both sides got on the score sheet. A special mention to the girls who volunteered for goalkeeper throughout the game and made some mighty last ditch saves. All in all is was a great game played in a friendly atmosphere and we were all in no doubt that the improvement shown in all Gaels u12 camogie players on the day was the real winner on the day.

 

U13 Camogie:

Roscommon Gaels U13's Camogie team travelled to Ahascragh to play Fohenagh/Ahascragh in the North County League Friday last. We were level at half time but then Fohenagh/Ahascragh notched up a lot of scores in the first 20 minutes of the second half of the game and our girls were unable to recover from that. They came out fighting in the second half but Fohenagh/Ahascragh had too much of a lead and came out winners.  The team were Emma Hough, Martha McSharry, Alison McNamara, Beibhinn Hoare, Ava Mulry, Grace O'Gara, Gwen Killion, Jennifer Morris, Anna Kiernan, Kate Harlow, Molly Rose Finneran, Zara Fallon, Shauna Walsh, Laura Glynn, Jane King & Grace Geraghty.

U16 Camogie:

Our U16 Camogie girls are playing Dominic's Wednesday evening @ 7.30pm in Lisnamult.

U8 & U10 Football:  Training continues Wednesday Evenings at 6.30pm.

 

U14 Football: Our U14's have set their sights firmly on the County Final after beating Boyle Sunday Evening in what was a brilliant display of football.  The game finished Roscommon Gaels 2-13 Boyle 1-7.  Team was Claire McNeill, Ellen Biesty, Ava Mulry, Carragh Kennedy, Chlone Donoghue, Mikayla Martin, Hollie Harkin, Roisin Feeley, Caitlyn Hannon, Keira Farrell, Gwen Killion, Emer O'Farrell, Jenifer Morris, Megan Donohue, Caoimhe Walsh, Zara Fallon, Eadaoin Walsh, Eimear O'Connor, Grace O'Gara, Ali Byrne, and Beibhinn Hoare.  Round 6 of the championship we play Clann na Gael on Saturday 18th in Clann Na Gael at 6pm.

U16 Football:  U16's continue to train Monday evenings at 7pm in the Hyde.

 

Minor Football: It's a busy week for our minors.  We play St Brigid's in Lisnamult on Thursday 16th at 7pm and then we play Castlrea on Saturday 18th in Castlrea at 7pm.  This is our last game in the Championship.

 

 

 

 

U14 Football: 

U14 Football. Reserve Summer League. Well done to all our lads this evening on a good win against Padraig Pearses in Woodmount. Final score Roscommon Gaels 7.8. Padraig Pearses 5.7.  Next game in v's Shannon Gaels/St Ronan's on Thursday evening at 7pm in Lisnamult.

 

Minor Football:

Congratulations to our minor team who recorded their second win of the campaign with a 2-17 to 3-5 win against St. Ciarans in Fuerty on Thursday last.Ciarans started in impressive fashion and led by 1-2 to 4 after 15 minutes. However our boys put in a huge second quarter, scoring some delightful scores to lead by 2-13 to 1-2 at the break.Ciarans came out with all guns blazing in the second half but a resolute defensive performance kept them at bay. A particular thanks to the lads who re arranged holidays and other commitments to be available for the game. Our next game is at home against Tulsk on Thursday next.

 

Senior Football:

Our Seniors returned to action Friday evening as they took on St. Brigid's at home in the O'Rourke Cup. Full time score O'Rourke Cup: Roscommon Gaels 2-11(17), St.Brigid's 1-5(8).

Our U16 Hurler's play Athleague/Tremane in the second round of the Championship on Wednesday 15th of August at 7pm in Lisnamult.

 

 

Ros Go Run

Ros Go Run 5th Annual Half Marathon and 10km Run Sunday 9th September 2018.

Ros GO RUN, which takes place on the Sunday 9th September 2018, it starts and finishes at Eire Og GAA pitch and brings runners through the picturesque area of North West Roscommon including The Woodlands of Loughglynn and surrounding area of Lisacul. The Race commences at 11.00 am and registration is available on-line and on the morning of the event. Both races are chipped timed by My Run Results.

The 2018 sponsor of the race is CBE. Ros Go Run, now in its fifth year and is a recognised event among national and international runners. The feedback from the Runners is extremely positive, particularly noting the community spirit that the runners feel both during the run and while enjoying refreshments after the event. It is indeed a community event which couldn't happen without the support of all the community especially our local sponsors. Each sponsor regardless of level of donation given is vital to the continued success of the event. The contributions made by the stewards, the local Community Employment Scheme, the Businesses who supply refreshments, all the volunteers, and indeed all those who come out to support the runners in the lead up to and on the day of the event. This support highlights the community spirit so clearly felt by the participants in their feedback. All this goes to make Ros Go Run an increasingly popular event.

Ros Go Run are delighted to announce that MS Ireland are again the main beneficiary of the 2018 event. This will be our fifth year in partnership with them and to date the event has contributed €7,500 00 to the fundraising efforts of MS Ireland. The event also makes a donation to two local organisations Eire Og GAA Club and Lisacul Community Development Co Ltd, both of which contribute to the organisation and running of the event. Congrats to all the winners in the Club Rossie members draw which took place last Tuesday evening in particular Roscommon Gaels members, Ciaran Heneghan who scooped the top prize of €20,000, Rikki O'Gara who won the 8th prize of €500 and to Damien Martin who won the 15th prize well done lads.

 

 

 

Club Development Fundraising draw 2018

After months of hard work and promotion our very successful club development draw took place last Sunday night in Doorlys Corner House. The decision to have the development draw in the summer instead of in December was taken by the Executive in the Spring and the finance committee have put a lot of work into the planning, organising, distribution, promotion and sell of this fundraiser to assist in the financing of our club for 2018. In excess of €22,000 was raised which is an outstanding figure and the final total will be confirmed in the coming days.

A big thank you to our sponsors who were, again, most generous in their donation of prizes for our draw. The business community of Roscommon town and its environs are under severe pressure from all fronts in relation to financial support of the very many worthy organisations in the Roscommon area. They were more than happy to support our draw and donated very attractive and lucrative prizes. Please thank our sponsors when you see them and more importantly please support them and their businesses in return for their support of Roscommon Gaels.

Our finance committee under the Chairmanship of Cahal Mahon has worked tirelessly over the past few months on this project. The committee of Cahal Mahon, Tom Fitzmaurice, Harry Hoare, Frank Nally, David Waldron, Paul Biesty, Niamh Kilmartin, Anthony Clogher Seamus Carthy and Teresa Hession have put in a huge amount of time and effort and have ensured that no stone was left unturned to make this draw successful. There was massive commitment involved and as with any fundraiser it has to be driven to ensure that all parts of the club get involved and contribute to the success of the draw. There was a great sense of purpose and the committee harnessed the help of people to not alone sell individually or through our club teams but also at other major events and matches that happened in the locality as well as selling in the town at the weekend. This was a major factor in contributing to the success of the draw. Thanks also to the club members, coaches and officers who gave of their time to assist with the distribution, promotion and selling of tickets over the past number of weeks. Thank you to each and every member of the finance committee for their work, time, energy, effort and enthusiasm and for the part they played in this draw and for making it the success it was.

Financing a large GAA club which fields and caters for as many codes and as many teams as Roscommon Gaels does is a mammoth task and it is one that should not be left to a small group. When we all take ownership of the financing of our club and help in whatever we can then the task becomes less onerous, By assisting and supporting club fundraisers, club lotto etc we will have the required monies to run and further invest and develop Roscommon Gaels club to its true potential.

So finally a really big thank you to everyone who sold and bought tickets for the development draw. To our members and the wider community's we are very grateful for your continued support of Roscommon Gaels GAA club. It is much appreciated and it will contribute greatly to the further development of our club.
