Roscommon manager Kevin McStay says an immediate return to Division 1 "would be perfect" for his side going forward.

The Rossies welcome Division 2 leaders Cavan in a crunch clash at Dr Hyde Park on Sunday and a win over the Breffni men would see them two points away from a return to the topflight heading into the final round against Cork.

"Division 1 would be perfect for us. It's so competitive. It's a toss-up whether it'll happen or not," McStay told the Irish Daily Star.

"We've shown, and lots of others have shown, you can win a provincial championship from Division 2. It's getting a bit rarer but it can be done, especially if you have a good Division 2 campaign.

"Even from my own perspective playing bigger teams is what it's about, figuring them out, the crowd and atmosphere - more razzmatazz playing Dublin, Kerry and Mayo.

"You learn a lot more. I wouldn't like to see our Connacht rivals having that advantage on us for two consecutive years. If we are to be competitive we want to be in the mix playing Mayo and Galway in Division 1. The more often you play the big boys the more you learn, the easier it is to play them in the summer."
