MINOR A FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

Na Fianna are the 2019 Minor A Football Champions as they bridged a 45 year gap since the first and only title for the Killeigh parish to capture this year’s title by beating Clara in the Final played before the Senior A Final last Sunday afternoon in BNM O’Connor Pk, Tullamore on a scoreline of 0-10 to 0-08. Na Fianna showed their belief, determination and never say die attitude as they staged a recovery from a first half deficit. Clara drew first blood in this tie as they opened the scoring with 2 pointed frees from Cormac Delaney inside the first 3 mins with Na Fianna getting off the mark with their opening point from Morgan Tynan on 6 mins. This is how it remained until Clara hit 3 points in a row between the 15th and 20th mins to go 4 points up but amazingly then Na Fianna clawed their way back hitting 4 points in a row from Jacob Beatty, James Nolan and Morgan Tynan (2) so at halftime the sides were level 0-05 apiece. Na Fianna were dealt a blow about midway through the first half as corner back David Carthy was forced off with a leg injury and he is wished a speedy recovery. Morgan Tynan put Na Fianna in front for the first time straight from the second half throw in with Clara hitting the next 2 points to re-take the lead before Jacob Beatty’s free on 10 mins drew the sides level again. Clara put their noses in front again on 19 mins but this would prove to be their final score as alike the first half Na Fianna would take control in the final 10 mins hitting the final 3 points without reply to turn a 1 point deficit into a 2 point winning margin including a pointed free from Adam Mangan with the final point a thing of beauty from super sub Fergal Dolan a minute into stoppage time. The final whistle was greeted by scenes of pure elation from the Na Fianna players, management and supporters and it was with great delight that Na Fianna captain David McElduff was presented with the St Mary’s cup by Offaly Chairman Tommy Byrne.

U13 C FOOTBALL COMPETITION FINAL

Just 5 days after winning their semi final Na Fianna U13 No 2 Team faced neighbours St Vincents in the U13 C Competition Final last Saturday evening in O’Brien Pk, Tullamore but unfortunately this time despite a valiant effort there would be no joy for Na Fianna as St Vincents claimed the win and title on a 1-08 to 0-06 scoreline. In the first half Na Fianna dominated the play but by half time were just shading it as they led 0-03 to 0-02. Then as the second half started the weather conditions detioriated rapidly and while both sides added 2 points apiece inside the first 5 mins it was St Vincents who managed to adapt to the difficult conditions easier as they firstly added 3 points before getting the decisive goal on 14 mins as a deceptive shot just dipped into the top right corner of the net. Thereafter there was just 1 further point apiece as St Vincents held on to claim the win.
