Tullamore Court Hotel Senior B Football Championship Round 5.

Ballycumber 1-14  Bracknagh 2-10.

Ballycumber players displayed all the attributes that are necessary to win a match when they played Bracknagh in Cappincur on Thursday evening. Already short the services through injury of regular players, Chris McDonald, Ritchie Dunne, Adrian Kelly and Joe Lowry, they were dealt a hammer blow when with less than twenty minutes of the game played a very harsh red card was issued to one of the players. The remaining fourteen men ran themselves to a standstill in what was a thrilling game of football. Both teams played attacking football with plenty of skill and many well worked scores.

Bracknagh had two points on the board before Nigel Grennan, who was to go on to have one of his greatest hours in a Ballycumber jersey, got the first of his eight points. John Egan drew the side's level after six minutes. As he has done before, Clive Keena got in behind the Bracknagh defence and drove the ball to the back of the net in the seventh minute. Almost immediately Bracknagh equalised with a well taken goal. The following ten minutes produced four points for each side, with Sean Hackett, Gary Larkin, Luke Gavin Mangan and Nigel Grennan scoring for Ballycumber. In  the next ten minutes  there were only two scores, a point by Nigel and on the stroke of half time, what appeared to be a miss kicked shot towards the goals ended up in the net to give Bracknagh a half time lead of 2-6 to 1-7.

Cormac Quinn from a free and a Nigel point from play brought the sides level after 3minutes.  Bracknagh regained the lead with a point from play. Nigel scored two points in a minute and Cormac Quinn pointed a free to extend the lead. Bracknagh replied with a point from play to narrow the game at 1-12 to 2-8. Nigel then got a point from a free to which Bracknagh responded with points from frees in the 25th and 27th minute to draw the game again. In an off the ball incident and on the intervention of an umpire the referee issued another red card to one of our defenders. It was then that the combined effort of the thirteen players came to the fore as they broke up attacks, turned over the ball and goalkeeper Leo Guinan made a brave save to prevent a goal. In the 32th minute a turnover on the half back line led to the ball being driven forward to Nigel who had made space for himself. In a quick movement he kicked the winning score to the delight of our supporters.

Ballycumber's next game is against Walsh Island in Cappincur on Friday 17th August.

Tullamore Court Hotel Junior B Football Semi Final.

Tubber 2-15 Ballycumber 0-12.

The first half of this game was evenly contested with the score at the interval of 1-8 to 0-9 in favour of Tubber. Ballycumber scorers were the recently married Conrad Casey contributing four points in a very impressive display. Conor Connelly and Fergal Daly accounted for two points and one from Mel Guinan.

The fitter Tubber players came to the fore in the second half and were comfortable winners at the end.

The Ballycumber management team of Vinny Minnock and Declan Daly are to be complimented on the excellent job they did in guiding this team to a county semi final. With limited numbers available and injuries taking their toll it has been a great year. The players who never gave up deserve the highest praise.

Wedding.

Congratulations to Conrad Casey and Meabh McDermott who were married on Friday. We wish them a long and happy life together. Not alone did Conrad play in the junior B semi Final on Sunday, he was also ready and available to enter the fray in the senior B match on Thursday evening. Luckily he was not called upon. Great commitment by Conrad as always.

Gaelic Sunday.

There was a great crowd of men, women and children at the commemoration of Gaelic Sunday on Sunday evening. Before the match, the tricolour was raised and a brief explanation of the history surrounding Gaelic Sunday was given by Club PRO Eamonn Larkin. In the match the Ballyard team were stronger and with youth on their side they ran up an impressive total. The change of referee at half time appeared to favour the Back Road Warriors and they got through for goals. The match was played without hand passing and featured many of the players wearing their every day clothes as would have been the situation in 1918.

Afterwards all assembled in Flynn's for a Bar B Q which was kindly sponsored by Peter Flynn.

The Table Quiz was light hearted but competitive. The successful night concluded with music.
