John Martin ( A lifetime volunteer for Magheracloone Mitchells)
Congratulations to John Martin who was nominated by the club for Volunteer Recognition & Appreciation Award. John received his award last week in The Four Seasons Hotel.
John Martin was born into a family of fourteen children in 1939.
He would tell you that he played very little football as a juvenile and he only fielded once for the Junior team and that was just to make up the fifteen.
He joined the club in 1956 but apart from serving as vice-chairman for a number of years he never sought high office and was quite content to stay out ofthe limelight.
He remembers collecting money house to house to fund the first development of the sports grounds in the sixties and being involved in the national CisteGael draw.
He was and still is our go-to guy around the club and grounds.
If anything needed doing John Martin was the man to ask.
Having said that, if he didn't think something should be done he would let us know in no uncertain terms.
In that sense he was the conscience of our club.
Down the years he lined the pitch, put out the flags, opened the dressing rooms, washed the jerseys and collected at the gate.
In recent years he even operated the new electronic scoreboard.
He served as a selector on the Junior double winning team of 1966.
Undoubtedly his proudest moment was watching his beloved Mitchells win their first Monaghan Senior Championship in 2004.
