The proposed rule changes will not cure gaelic football’s ills, according to Malachy O’Rourke.

The Farney County boss has expressed his doubts about the radical five proposals announced by the GAA’s Standing Committee on the Playing Rules Committee this week.

“It’s hard to say without seeing them,” he told TG4’s GAA BEO prior to today’s Monaghan SFC decider.

“I do believe there’s a need for some experimentation because I think the game as a spectacle is suffering a wee bit at the minute.

“That’s mainly to do with the amount of people going back in defence. I’m not sure if these rules are going to be the answer.”

O'Rourke – who also voiced his opposition to trialing the new rules in the league – continued: “There are some tweaks maybe will improve the game. I think looking at those things, I think it’s going too far. Time will tell.

“I wouldn’t criticise anyone for trying to make the game better but, looking at those in the cold light of day, I’m not too sure they are the answers to the problems at the minute.”
