Minor Hurling Championship Preview

August 23, 2019

Killyon/Longwood and Trim should provide the tie of the round.

The busy times for the Minor hurlers in the county continue this weekend when they play their second round of the week in the Minor Hurling Championship.

The games on Wednesday threw up some noteworthy results with Ratoath’s defeat of Killyon/Longwood probably being the most eye catching after the two sides respective results in Round 1.

All games take place on Saturday August 24th at 14:00.

Division 1

Clann na nGael v Kilmessan (Venue – Athboy, Referee – Eamon Barry):  Two sides who are coming into this game on the back of heavy defeats in Round 2 with this result likely to be dictated by who can bounce back the better.

Clann na nGael’s defence has been rather porous to date while up front they have been struggling to gain some traction with only twenty points registered to date. Kilmessan haven’t been on fire either as they’ve registered just nine points more than tomorrows opponents.

They have been much tighter defensively than the Athboy/Rath Chairn outfit and it’s this which could be the difference between the sides.

Verdict:  Kilmessan

Kildalkey v Ratoath (Venue – Killyon, Referee – Henri Clifford):  Kildalkey come into this game in fine form after picking up a win and a draw from their two games to date and their forward line was in sensational form midweek against Clann na nGael as they registered a wonderful 5-25.

Ratoath, who came into Wednesday’s game against Killyon/Longwood in grave danger of falling out of contention of qualifying for the final had they lost, found a spark and ground out a 1-11 to 0-11 win over the combination outfit. A second road trip awaits this weekend and they would be more than content with a similar scoreline.

Verdict:  Ratoath

Killyon/Longwood v Trim (Venue – Longwood, Referee – Jimmy Greville):  Defensively Trim have been in miserly form in both their games to date as they have conceded just twenty two points across their two games, form which is mightily impressive while their forwards clicked into gear on Wednesday as they put Kilmessan to the sword.

Killyon/Longwood, after slipping to defeat against Ratoath, will be looking to bounce back to winning ways and with the confidence gained from beating Trim twice in the recent Summer League (including in the final), will come into this encounter with no shortage of confidence.

In what could be the tie of the round, it’s very difficult to pick a winner between the two teams but with Killyon/Longwood having lost out during the week, their greater need for the points might just tip the balance.

Verdict:  Killyon/Longwood

Division 2

St. Peter’s Dunboyne v O’Mahony’s/Wolfe Tones (Venue – Dunboyne, Referee – Sean Gahan):  St. Peter’s Dunboyne have been in sensational form to date in the Championship and if they continue to click then they will be very hard to stop on home ground against the O’Mahony’s/Wolfe Tones combination.

Tallies of 3-11 and 3-18 are a hallmark of a team in rich scoring form while defensively they’ve conceded a paltry 3-20 in total.

Have O’Mahony’s/Wolfe Tones the firepower to overwhelm their defence? They clearly have a live goal threat as showcased by the four goals they registered on Wednesday against Dunderry and in Eoin Donegan they have a full back who will guard the square as though his life depends on it.

Overall though it looks as though Dunboyne might have a bit more all over the field and will pose a few too many questions.

Verdict:  St. Peter’s Dunboyne

Kiltale v Na Fianna (Venue – Kiltale, Referee – Mark Reilly):  Kiltale are motoring nicely with a win and a draw to date while Na Fianna have found the going tough with two defeats.

The Enfield/Baconstown outfit will fancy their chances of causing an upset in this encounter but it’s hard to look past Kiltale.

Verdict:  Kiltale

Rathmolyon v Dunderry – Postponed.
