MFL semi final: Simonstown stun Skryne with late comeback

March 23, 2019

Simonstown's Aaron Chinchilla heads for the Skryne goal during the MFL semi final.

Simonstown Gaels 5-8  Skryne 2-16

This game will live long in the memory of every Simonstown supporter who was there to witness this spirited fightback. This game resembled the famous comeback of Simonstown vs Dunboyne in 2017 with both teams being 12 points down.

The Gaels started horrendously conceding 2 goals after just 4 minutes of play. The Navan men were devoid of ideas and struggled to gain any meaningful possession in the opening twenty six minutes. The game appeared to be finished as a contest with the score 2-6 to 0-0. A comeback felt incomprehensible due to the fact that the Gaels had yet to register a score in the opening 28 minutes. However Alex Devlin's quick thinking dinking the goalkeeper gave the Simonstown men a glimmer of hope. Josh Carolan won the next kick out and his lung bursting run set up Ben Gibney who finished with aplomb. The Gaels added two frees at end of the half and a Simonstown rally cry from the supporters greeted the players as they sprinted into the dressing rooms. Score at the end of a strange first half was Simonstown 2-2 (8) Skryne 2-6 (12)

The Gaels began the second half very brightly and opened the scoring with two frees from Davy Barry. Simonstown found themselves in the lead for the first time in the match when Ben Gibney rounded the goalkeeper and got his second goal of the match. However Skryne responded very well to the goal and with five minutes remaining they were five points up. The introduction of Adam O'Donoughue into proceedings was an inspirational moment for the management. The super sub made an instant impact scoring a goal from close range but his second goal was the moment of the match. O'Donoughue received the ball on the 45 and continued his run towards goal. O'Donoughue found himself one on one with the keeper and rocketed his shot into the bottom corner. This proved to be the winning goal of the match but there were other moments that ensured a Gaels win. Most notably Liam Purvis's block on the goal line and a remarkable point blank save from Oskar Mooney. The management team can be proud of the desire and the spirited resilence of the players. Best for Simonstown Tadhg Hanrahan, Aaron Chinchilla, Josh Carolan, Oskar Mooney, Ben Gibney and Super sub Adam O'Donoughue
