Jim Curtis - A popular Guest of Honour on County Final day

Syddan and Meath GAA stalwart Jim Curtis was the Guest of Honour at yesterday’s SFC final.

Jim’s father Jimmy was a midfielder on the famed Rathkenny team that won 5 SFC titles in 1917, ’18, ’19, ’22 and ’23.

The centenary of the 1918 success was marked by inviting his son Jim to throw in the ball for the Dunboyne versus Summerhill clash.

Jim boasts a lengthy and distinguished involvement in gaelic football in his own right.

His started his football career with the Syddan juveniles, winning Championship honours in 1946. He went on to play Minor level with Dee Rangers and donned the green and gold jersey at minor level in 1952 and ’53.

He played adult football with Rathkenny, Castletown, North Meath and Kilberry.

The affable Jim was coach when Syddan reached the 1980 Meath SFC final and was subsequently appointed as a selector with the Meath senior football team.

He was a selector for the Centenary Cup triumph of 1984 and was a selector for the Leinster JFC successes in 1986 and ’88 and All-Ireland title in the latter year.

He has served as a member of the County Board’s Executive and Disciplinary Committees and was Chairman of the Sean Gael Committee.

One of the county’s best known and longest serving Gaels, Jim received a warm welcome at Meath GAA HQ yesterday.
