Team for the Championship

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Now that the league is over and objective one is completed (promotion) it's now objective two (reaching leinster final) and please let's not have the few complaining that it's mod who should pick team and we can't have opinion, its a forum it needs our opinion whether you agree with them or not. Lets see what are the opinions of what team /subs should be used.
I'll start

1 O'Rourke
2 Keoghan
3 Reilly
4 Curran
5 Lenehan
6 Menton
7 Burke /Dalton
8 Meade
9 Gillespie
10 Ward/Byrne
11 Carroll
12 Reilly
13 Bray
14 Joe
15 Newman

Those who might start or come on as subs, Gilsenan, Byrne, Harrington, Wallace, Kenny, young Rowe, Farrell, Burke /Dalton,
The only reason I'd include Joe is that we seem to still lob high balls in with no natural ball winner in forwards, Ward might add something to half forward line but only as a dirty ball winner and firing ball into forward line. If this isn't happening then I'd put Dalton at 10 with Burke back at 7 also bring C O'Connor back onto panel. Think switching Reilly and Menton is right option at champ time. I'm not too pushed what team starts I think we have some great players and ones that can get us to Leinster final. I wouldn't mind if Ward was just left as sub same applies to Joe and Byrne. Queeney wasn't named last night, is he still on panel?

What's the story with Joe and Queeney? Queeney hasn't been on the bench the last few games and Joe wasn't there yesterday.

Totally agree about fitness the one thing that stood out for me was how Monaghan just ran past us on the overlap from half backs and midfield and we had no answers to this we simply could not keep up no tracking back or man marking our fitness level is way of the pace of other teams we have just as talanted footballers just need to work harder on fitness

What about David Geaney or Donal Lenihan from Dunboyne. We're really lacking scoring forwards, pretty sure the two of them have accounted for all of Dunboynes scores in the championship.. Young Lenihan was selected on the future champions team from the Siegerson cup so he should be at least looked at..

RD, the days in which the team (or forward line at least) was built around Joe are long gone. You need to move on and accept that Wallace and Gilsenan are the type of players we need most with Bray and Newman inside. Peadar and Graham Reilly didn't perform last night and the backs were too slow, second to most balls. Graham Reilly is better on the right wing (wide) where he has more space to run, kick scores; maybe him and Wallace can link up overlap if they want to run at defenses. But with Lenihan also anxious to get forward more and more the drawback is we can then get very exposed on the counter attack if wing back and wing forward don't track back and defend enough, as had been evident on several occasions in the past.

Glass perhaps you misunderstood me, the only reason id stick joe at ff is for another option than the running game, I'd tell him not to move from that spot and drop in the odd ball, but id also be happy to leave him on bench once we fully embracing the running game.

look tictac or whatever your called meaths biggest problem is midfield and we need to put somebody in that can move never mind run . if that means putting burke in there at chb so menton can move midfield its worth the risk. burke is a good man to hold a position and great man marker not so bad going forward either

Blackspot I don't think fitness is the problem. We are a small team compared to Monaghan when it comes to sheer strength and bulk. They bulldozed past our players and we could do nothing about it. Same happened our U21s against Kildare. We have a lot of relatively young players who have not fully developed physically.

The boy grahamc9897 looks like all-ireland material... although we're gonna find it hard to win with a third of the team missing!

How anyone is putting Joe and Mickey Burke in yet, is beyond me. Joe hasnt performed since he came back from the US, and Burkey is only coming back from injury!! Delighted to see the likes of Cian Ward cut from the panel, hopefully he takes the right attitude and works hard to get the fitness to where it should be, because he has the natural skill. I would have previously agreed with some posters and changed the mid-field, but Meade and Gillespie were very good on Saturday evening, and I would be inclined to stick with them, at least for the first game of the Champo. One thing I would change however, is STOP GIVING BRIAN MEADE THE BALL FOR FREE KICKS AROUND THE MID. The lad can field a ball, and can do a lot of good, but he cannot kick a ball or pick a pass.

Either way, I wont have much expectation from this summer, but I hope in my heart I will be pleasantly surprised. We Meath fans have to be patient, we are at the START of the rebuilding process. But I have faith that we have the talent in the county, and the right management team.

A good point was raised there about Donal Lenihan from Dunboyne. A great scorer and being awarded with being one of the future stars surely has to stand for something?
