U-21 Manager

(Oldest Posts First)

Just wondering has there been any plan put in place to appoint an U-21 Manager for 2017 yet? Will Andy Mc Entee take on the job as well, surely an early appointment is vital if we are to give the players the required preparation. This year's winners (Mayo) started training last October while it seems to be almost acceptable in Meath to go through a poor Hastings Cup campaign followed by a disappointing Leinster Championship exit.

Having seen the county minor team play in 2016, 15 & 14 I am confident that with the right preparation that we could go very close in Leinster.

Some great players to pick from Daire Rowe, Thomas Reilly, Charlie Bird, Brian Harnan, iarla Hughes, Ronan Jones, David Mc Loughlin, Jack O' Sullivan, Johnny Lynch, Gavin McGowan, Halligan, the Ryans, Podge Mc Gowan, Daniel O' Neill, Ethan Devine, Scully, James Conlon, Sean Reilly, Campion.

Next year is the first year of the U20 grade which replaces the U21 so we are working off a panel of players who I believe shouldn't be part of the Meath Senior team for the league but should instead be left with the U20's and concentrate on doing the best we can do at that level.

Fellas like Caolac Halligan, Thomas O'Reilly, Podge McGowan, Dan O'Neill, Ronan Jones, Iaral Highes, the twin Ryan's should form the spine of that team along with some of this year's minors.

I know I've left out a few obvious contenders from the older group but that's just off the top of my head.

I'm pretty sure there is one more year of the U-21 grade left...I just think from a development point of view we are missing a massive opportunity by not putting enough resources into proper preparation, by right next years manager should already be appointed and be scanning club championship games.

If the U-21 team went through extensive training and the Junior team was treated as exclusively u-23, I think the county senior team would find itself in a far better place within the next 2-3 years.

Andy Mc Entee has come in as senior manager and hopefully he will do a great job but that's only one rung on the ladder and we need to get the proper structure in place at all levels if the county is going to progress in the long term.

As always the hoganstand is on the ball. Sean Barry was appointed for 2 years last year. So unless he has stood down and I haven't heard he is still u21 manager.

Can't disagree with any of the comments here and indeed their is good talent coming through. Barry Callaghan didn't put his name forward for the Meath job,I reckon he will get the U20/U21 job.
