Meath V Down 1991

(Oldest Posts First)

Enjoyed watching Meath v Down yesterday despite the disappointment of the result. Very hard hitting and some excellent football played by both teams. Gerry McEntee was outstanding as was Flynn and Lyons was brilliant before injury eventually forced him off. O'Rourke had a great impact when he came in while Alan Browne also had an impact. The damage had already been done at that stage with the majority of the Meath backs under huge pressure. The forward line was unbalanced with Gillic too close to goal. Coyle should have been in the backs with Foley lucky to remain on the field. Brenden Reilly also better further up field but it just wasn't to be despite a massive effort. Lets not forget an excellent Down team that repeated the trick by taking down the Dubs three years later.

Nobody to blame for that defeat only Sean Boylan, he allowed a player dictate to the starting line up resulting in a fall out in the camp and o Rourke not playing as he had the FLU ? I had the flu once, was in bed for three days, and week for seven, nobody with flu does what o Rourke did that day when he came on.

Well, i won't mention names but lets just say it was the only game he started all year was the final, o Rourke didn't like the idea of a Young player been dropped so he .......................................................................... Major fallout, rumor has it a few digs were throwing in the dressing room after the game.

Anyways, ancient history now

unreal comeback, 1-14 to 0-6 at one stage, Down were on the ropes big time. i will never forgive seamus prior for only allowing 25 seconds injury time and meath with the line ball in. i think we would have got a goal.

does anyone know something odd about that years all stars line up?

It's the only time in the history of the All Stars that the All Ireland beaten finalists had more All Stars then the winners.

Mick Lyons was brilliant that year, especially in the 4 game saga and did not get an all star.

Mick Lyons got his all-stars in 84 and 86 before Meath ever made it to the final. Hard to believe he got none after that. Was there a rule that if a player got suspended in that year through club or county that they couldn't get an all-star award. Lyons was clearly best full-back in the country until he retired in 92.

the 91 all stars had 4 players who didnt win a championship game with their county in 1991, 3 dublin and 1 kildare. martin lynch got one but louth dumped them out in first round in drogheda with two late goals. the entire down won the all ireland and micky linden and james mccarten didnt get an allstar or full forward peter whitnell who scored 2-2 of 2-8 against kerry in semi final. meath got 6, down 4. you would think meath and down would get 6 apiece, take lynchs place and another dub out.

that all ireland would have been the greatest to win.
