July 25, 2017

Drumconrath's Derek Duff

In Carlanstown

Drumconrath 0-18 Cortown 0-9

Drumconrath proved League form is no guide easily brushed aside the High Flying Division 4 League leaders Cortown's challenge with a double scores win in this Junior A Championship game in Carlanstown.

An out of sorts Cortown could not handle the Drumconrath side that played with high intensity and no little flair that really from early on left no doubt how the result was going to end. Drumconrath dont moan in defeat but this victory is one they will savor the satisfaction of for the time being and will resist the opportunity to crow about.

Drumconrath led from the off and without the holidaying  Patrick Dunne, Alan McEvoy and Graham Tighe who had all flown the coop to far off lands for a deserved break. Before the game there was concern that this along with the absence of the suspended Terry Skelly would hamper Drumconrath's chances but in truth the Reds dominated this game from the off as the only crowing that could be heard came from a Rooster on a nearby farm who like the opposition was definitely out of sync.

Derek Duff who terrorized the Cortown defense throughout with a man of the match performance in which he ended with a personal tally of 9 points, started off the scoring with a point inside the 1st minute as midfielder Sean McMahon added another soon after. Cortown playing catch up replied added 3 pointed frees from Ryan ORourke by the 10th minute as Daniel Byrne added a Drumconrath point.

Duff pushed Drums ahead with a free on 12 minutes as Breen Smyth fresh from his aeroplane trip from Templemore getting Cortown's 1st point from play to tie the sides as the 1st quarter ended. A good hit on Jamie Myles from Daragh OHalloran and it seemed as if Cortown would get more into the game but on the resulting Cortown attack Aiden Tighe delivered a similar hit on Smyth and almost immediately his brother Peter ushered Cortown Talisman Glen Loughran out over the sideline and it was clear Drumconrath where not just making up numbers and where up for this game.

Drums put in a storming last 10 minutes as points from Duff (2 frees), a further 2 points from Paul Tighe and another from Tomas Conlon pushed them 5 ahead and while David Rispin, while marshaled well by the no nonsense Aiden Tighe, proved he is not just a colourful writer tapped over a fine point to leave 4 points between the rivals as Drums led 0-9 to 0-5 at the break.

Indeed Paul Tighe could have had 2 goals as he palmed against the bar on 21 minutes and had another palmed effort pushed over the bar by the Cortown net minder as the wide score of Drums 4 to Cortown 1 was a good indication of how the game was going.

Drumconrath supporters looked eagerly to the 2nd half as while the breeze definitely  strengthened as taughts of a win seemed very likely and they where not to be disappointed as Drumconrath started the half similar to they ended the 1st.

Duff still on fire as the smallest man on the pitch was winning Marks again and again pointed twice within 3 minutes as Cortown struggled with the strong running Drumconrath attack marshaled well by Wayne Reilly and driven on by the demon like play of the excellent Stephan Crosby. Tomas Conlon another to have a fine game pointed and Duff from a free put Drumconrath 8 up as Cortown seemed dazzled and unable to make any impression on the game.

Cortown added a point but again Drums pushed on with Duff (2) and Paul Tighe putting an amazing 10 points between the sides 0-16 to 0-6. Two Cortown points were answered by the rampant Conlon and when Daniel Byrne pointed from 40 meters with 3 minutes left Drumconrath where in Cloud Cuckoo land.

A late Cortown point finished the scoring as Drums interduced a number of subs to add to the feel good feeling and can reflect in a job well done.
